DR
GRAHAM STEELE played by TIM PAGE
One of
the original five interns from the beginning of the show (and the
only one to last the entire run), Dr Graham Steele was serious
and dedicated, some would say old beyond his years. He developed
a special interest in child asthma, but was also the doctor who
did a psychological evaluation on Sister Jeffries when she began
having premonitions!
His first
love was for a sassy American singer, Abbie Singleton. She fell
for the earnest young man, and helped bring him out of his shell
a little, but promptly died of a fatal illness.
He then
had a brief relationship with nurse Jill Gordon, before marrying
Sister Eve Turner. After trying unsuccessfully for a baby of their
own, they tried to adopt, but it wasn't to be. Eve's obsession with
having a child threatened their marriage, but eventually she did
conceive, and little Jessica was born. More heartache was to follow
when Jessica was kidnapped by Emma Dixon, the psychologically disturbed
kiosk assistant who was engaged to Dennis Jamison. Dennis realised
what had happened, and Jessica was returned unharmed.
Sadly,
the Steele's marriage broke up and Eve left for London, taking Jessica
with her. His next big relationship was with Jill's cousin, nurse
Maggie Gordon. They loved each other, but were so different that
they found it impossible to stay together. They gave their relationship
one last shot after Maggie almost died from a rare illness. She
gave up her fling with Dr Peter Holland, and Graham proposed to
her. Just as things seemed to be working out for the pair, news
came from London that Eve had been killed in a hit and run accident.
The arrival of young Jessica back in Australia put a further strain
on them. Jessica and Maggie did not get on, and Maggie got tired
of always being Graham's third priority, after his daughter and
the hospital.
She left
the Albert to retrain as a doctor, and from then on Graham remained
a single father. Graham took a few months break from the hospital
towards the end of its run, returning as the new Superintendent,
shortly before the Albert closed its doors forever.
