The
Young Doctors
The patient
cast members of that sundry series, The Young Doctors, met at Juliana's
last Tuesday to celebrate the fact that they had beaten the dreaded
Number 96 to become the longest-running soapie on Aussie TV.
Champagne
flowed freely as the stars tripped self-consciously into the dimly
lit Hilton disco for a low key cast-only party. Alfred Sandor, who
plays Dr Raymond Shaw, arrived wearing a brown wig and a big grin.
When hailed, his face dropped. "I'm his younger brother,"
he replied, disappointed at being recognised so easily. It seems
the series has turned Alfred grey. He wore the wig to show what
he looked like when it started. Gwen Plumb, who plays Ada, had no
need for disguise. She looked unchanged, even radiant, that the
series has given her six years of solid work. Other original cast
members at the party were Tim Page (Dr Graham Steele), Lyn James
(Helen Gordon), Susanne Stuart (Sister Gibbs), Chris King (Dennis
Jamison), Judy McBurney (Sister Tania Livingston) and Michael Beecher
(Dr Denham). As the cake was cut, episode 1219 went to air. Number
96 only made 1218 before it bit the ratings dust. Gwen Plumb summed
it all up in her speech to fellow cast members: "It's been
six wonderful years of watching people being run over by trucks
and electrocuted on their wedding night."
NOTES:
Judy McBurney didn't actually begin her role as Tania Livingston
until 16 weeks into the show.
