restless on pay
These
days there's more drama off-camera than on the set of The Young
Doctors. It's contract renewal time, you see, but so far no-one
has signed on the dotted line.
At present,
under an Actors' Equity agreement with Grundys, which makes the
soapie, Young Doctors regulars get $588.50 for a week in which they
make four episodes and $482.70 for three episodes. That may sound
like a lot but the norm is a two episode week which pays $377 (about
$250 after tax and agents' fees).
The cast argues that those in Punishment, another Grundy production
yet to be screened, got a whole lot more than those in Young Doctors,
a top-rating show. Also, Punishment worked on a three-tier payment
system for regulars. Top money was $650 for a two episode week and
at the other end of the scale it was $450. Regulars in Doctors,
who until now have been paid a flat rate, also want a tiered system,
though they're not asking for quite as much as those in Punishment
were paid.
